「ロトルア楽鼓」は、ニュージーランド北島ロトルア市民の太鼓チームです。2005年7月に片桐 啓恵（ひろえ）とポール・ハウエルが、大胴３個・締め太鼓２個、篠笛その他の和楽器を伴ってロトルア市民となりました。
2006年4月に、ロトルアで最初の太鼓講座を開き、７月１日のRAVE（Rotorua Arts Village Experiences)「マタリキ」ファスティバルでチーム「ロトルア楽鼓」を結成してデビュー。その後、RAVEの市民講座にTaikoコースが設けられました。2008年からは、独立したチームとして、毎週金曜日の夜に練習を続けています。メンバーは10名程。ロトルア市内の様々なイベントをはじめ、ベイ・オブ・プレンティ地方のイベントからも演奏依頼を受けて活動しています。
“Rotorua Racco” is the Taiko (Japanese Drum) team of Rotorua in New Zealand.
Hiroe Katagiri & Paul Howell brought 3 Odou (big drum) , 2 Shime (small drum) , Sinobue (Japanese bamboo flute) and other Japanese traditional instruments to NZ in July 2005.
Hiroe&Paul had their first Taiko workshop in Rotorua in April '06, then started the Taiko team " Rotorua RACCO".
Rotorua Racco's debut was at Matariki Festival performed at RAVE ('06.7.1).
Taiko workshops became a part of RAVE's regular workshops.
In 2008, "Rotorua RACCO" workshop separated from RAVE to become an independent group, but still hold practices on every Friday evening at RAVE Studio One.
"Rotorua RACCO" (about 10 members) plays for Rotorua local events, school programs, and Bay of Plenty area events.
啓恵は、23年（2009年現在）の和太鼓＆篠笛奏者および和太鼓指導の経験があります。長崎の太鼓チーム「楽鼓（らっこ）」の創始者・代表として活動しました。長野県を拠点とするプロの伝統芸能・歌舞劇団「田楽座」に師事。また、日本各地の和太鼓・篠笛の仲間との交流から学び、お囃子と日本の祭り本来のスタイルを大切にしています。
伝統的な和太鼓の技法は驚くほど多様で、素朴さと深遠さの見事な融合です。荒々しく力で圧倒する太鼓ではなく、心地よく響くお囃子＝大胴・締め太鼓・鉦・笛などのアンサンブルの魅力を、NZに広めたいと心を砕いています。
啓恵は和太鼓奏者になる前は、ドラムスやパーカッションをやっていたので、「世界の共通語」としての太鼓の可能性にも着目。マオリのカパハカ（歌と踊り）、クック諸島のドラム、サンブラスタ（ロトルアのサンバ・バンド）などとのフリー・セッションも変幻自在に取り組んでいます。
ロトルア楽鼓のメンバーは、基本、伝統的な曲、創作曲など、さまざまな練習に意欲的に取り組んでいます。派手さが目立つ大胴だけではなく、地道な締め太鼓や鉦、篠笛にも積極的。誰もが、どんなパートも演奏できることを目標にしています。それが、「お囃子」の本当の魅力に触れる一番の方法だからです。
易しい曲も難しい曲も、レギュラーと新人が一緒に練習するのも、ロトルア楽鼓の特徴です。練習効率よりも、人と人との絆で息づく芸能の奥深さを大切にしているからです。
ロトルア楽鼓の練習には、レギュラー・メンバーでなくても、誰でも、見学・参加をできます。（出番前の練習は特別練習になるので、見学・体験参加を希望の場合は、お問い合わせください）
定期練習への参加以外、半日・１日・泊つき講座も可能です。

Hiroe Katagiri-Howell has more than 20 years experience as a Taiko & Shinobue player and teacher. She was the leader of “ RACCO” (an amateur Taiko team based in Nagasaki, Japan). Hiroe learned taiko from one of the best professional teams in Japan “Dangaku-za” based in Nagano.
Dangaku-za style is real traditional festival music. Japanese traditional drumming skills have amazing variety, great fusion of simpleness and deepness.
Hiroe also has many connections to Taiko teams in Japan, her style has been learned from each of them. Rotorua RACCO is following real traditional Japanese festival music "Ohayashi" styles and feelings. Taiko sounds shouldn't be just loud noise. "Ohayashi" sounds should be a very comfortable ensemble between big drums, small drums, bells and flutes.
Hiroe was a percussion player before she started to learn Taiko. She believes " Drums and percussion are a common form of global communication". Rotorua is a quite multi-ethnic city, often Rotorua Racco has had chances to perform session with Maori Kapa Haka, Cook Islands Drums, Samba Bands and African Drums, etc.
Rotorua Racco members are practicing basic skills, traditional music, modern music and our original music. everyone is keen to learn not just big drums but small drums, bells, also some members are learning to play Japanese flute too. To practice every part is the best way to catch "Ohayashi", essences and feelings.
Rotorua Racco's concept is " advanced members, beginners, always practice together!".
